The Outlaw Archetype
Interior Design and Business collide when Brand Archetypes are utilized as a tool in design development. Typically used to help a company create a brand identity and define their ideal customer or client, Archetypes are used similarly in design to build a narrative that targets a specific niche client and brings a project to life. At the heart of every project WORKSHOP | studio designs, a single Archetype guides the project from ideation to completion.

DESIGNING FOR
the outlaw archetype
–
Outlaws are characterized as those who don’t want to conform to the norms of society. They are independent and driven by an anger to fight for what is righteous. In the design world, these traits can be exemplified in many ways, be it painting the walls a bright mix of colors or layering the floor with mix-matched rugs. Outlaw design is spontaneous and bold with a liberating feel. It should inspire an attitude of rebellion and individuality. When applied to interior design, the Outlaw archetype champions a philosophy that embraces disruption. This design approach isn't about playing by the rules—it's about breaking them, turning traditional spaces on their heads, and making bold choices that reflect individuality.
Color palettes for the Outlaw would be bold, bright and stray far from anything that could be deemed typical. Large patterns and prints mixed with textures and all manners of shapes is also encouraged for this archetype. If used for something like a hotel, the lobby could feature striking sculptural light fixtures and metallic accents, unique furniture and luxurious fabrics. Anything that seems eclectic, moody, and maximalist is perfect for the Outlaw archetype.
When we think of the Outlaw in interior design, we think of raw materials, exposed elements, and a blend of old and new. Industrial-style furniture—think steel, reclaimed wood, and unfinished concrete—is often paired with vintage or antique pieces. This mash-up of eras feels rebellious, as it breaks away from the usual rules of harmony and consistency that define more traditional interiors. This design style embraces street art, graffiti, abstract pieces, and vintage rock posters. Bold, in-your-face artworks dominate, and the aim isn’t to blend in, but to make a statement. These visuals speak to the soul of the Outlaw—expressing individuality, freedom, and a bit of defiance.
Outlaw interiors appeal to those who want their home to feel different from the norm—a place that mirrors their personality, values, and desires. Whether it’s through daring color choices, unconventional layouts, or rebellious decor, these spaces make it clear that the occupant refuses to follow trends or blend in with the crowd.
In essence, Outlaw-inspired interior design is for those who want to create a space that stands apart from the conventional—one that celebrates individuality, breaks the rules, and offers a bold reflection of the occupant's personality. In interior design, it’s about rejecting the expected, embracing the raw, and finding beauty in what others might overlook.
